Support UNICEF's Tap Project:

Bringing Clean Water to Children World Wide

Lenny Kravitz, Project Ambassador

What Is the UNICEF Tap Project?

In 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project was born in New York City based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.

Since its inception in 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised nearly $3 million in the U.S. and has helped provide clean water for millions of children globally. Now in its sixth year, the award-winning UNICEF Tap Project, a nationwide campaign sponsored by the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, will return during World Water Week, March 19–25. The first program of its kind, the UNICEF Tap Project has become a dynamic movement that affords everyone the opportunity to help provide the world’s children with safe, clean water.

Through numerous fundraising and volunteer activities, the UNICEF Tap Project celebrates the clean water we enjoy on a daily basis by encouraging celebrity, restaurant, volunteer, corporate, and government supporters to give this vital resource to children in developing countries. The concept is basic and compelling: “When You Take Water, Give Water.”

2012 UNICEF Tap Project Funds will specifically target Togo, Vietnam, Mauritania, and Cameroon.

UNICEF’s Role

UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization, and UNICEF is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal of reaching the day when ZERO children die of preventable causes. Currently, UNICEF works in more than 100 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices.

Millennium Development Clean Drinking Water Goal Met:

The world has met the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water, well in advance of the MDG 2015 deadline, according to a report issued today by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). Between 1990 and 2010, more than two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “Today we recognize a great achievement for the people of the world. This is one of the first MDG targets to be met. The successful efforts to provide greater access to drinking water are a testament to all who see the MDGs not as a dream, but as a vital tool for improving the lives of millions of the poorest people.”

“For children this is especially good news,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “Every day more than 3,000 children die from diarrheal diseases. Achieving this goal will go a long way to saving children’s lives.”

Lake warned that victory could not yet be declared as at least 11% of the world’s population—783 million people—are still without access to safe drinking water, and billions without sanitation facilities.

“The numbers are still staggering,” he said, “But the progress announced today is proof that MDG targets can be met with the will, the effort and the funds.”

The report highlights, however, that the world is still far from meeting the MDG target for sanitation, and is unlikely to do so by 2015. Only 63% of the world now have improved sanitation access, a figure projected to increase to only 67% by 2015, well below the 75% aim in the MDGs. Currently 2.5 billion people still lack improved sanitation.

Sugar Vs. Low Calorie Sweeteners

Here’s the low down…

Artificial low calorie sweeteners are so much sweeter than sugars.

Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar
Saccharine is 300 times sweeter than sugar, but is made in a lab.
Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar, but is made from sugar.

Do they cause cancer?
There’s no evidence that they cause cancer in humans.

Do they cause neurological and brain damage?
There’s no evidence that they do.

Do they cause weight gain? This is paradoxical. They can cause weight gain because we overcompensate by over eating diet foods and drinks.

Instead of artificial sweetener, use stevia or brown sugar.

Reduce your intake of sugar by mixing half part of diet soda with seltzer water, which is still sweet, tasty and refreshing. Another good rule of thumb is to add 25% water to any drink and it will still remain sweet, but will contain a less amount of sugar.

Also, if you want to add sweetener to anything, add some ground flax seed or chia seed in addition to the sweetener, so that your brain feels full.

Rosie & OWN's Talk Show Match Made In Media Heaven Gone Wrong…

Rosie O’Donnell and Oprah Winfrey are two media heavy weights and their collaboration in a talk show on Oprah’s struggling network OWN was thought to be a match made in heaven, but OWN has decided to cancel the show due to low ratings in what is being called the two queens of talk split.

In one single disappointing season, Rosie’s big comeback talk show that was supposed to bring big ratings to the OWN hasn’t gone as planned and the TV titans have decided to go their separate ways. This was a second chance for the former queen of daytime who had her own show that made her household name which she ended herself because she said she was at the age she wanted to leave, then she was on The View and her time there came to a tumultuous end with her getting into it with Elizabeth Hasselback and Barbara Walters. So the O has canned the Ro. However, I would say, one season is too short to expect a show to have very high ratings because people have too many choices, so they must be given time to warm up to any show, but I guess that's the American way, if anything doesn't hit the ground running, pull the plug on it.

The OWN is struggling and any show that’s not getting enough ratings which OWN needs has got to go, so Rosie off the cuff, in the enviable 7pm timeslot targeted at stay at home moms who weren’t watching had to go. The show which was getting 150,000 viewers didn’t justify the staff, money, time and effort invested in it. It went from a full blown talk show with a studio audience to a smaller a single guest format that didn’t lure big name stars, so the ratings got worse and it is said that Rosie began feuding with staffers.

Right now, there is plenty of blame going around as the final show tapes this week. Although this is a blow for Rosie, knowing that she is set financially, she will be just fine. I feel bad for the staffs that work on the show because now they will have to find other jobs in the brutal entertainment/media industry in this weak economy.

Philosophically speaking, a talk show with good ratings is like catching lightening in a bottle, there are so many variables and unexplainable circumstances that make it happen. So if you have it, you keep it because it’s hard to recreate. It’s a blessing not to be taken for granted or lightly, because once you let it go, you may never be able to get it back. That is what we see occuring in this case.

However, to all those who hate Rosie as they've shown all over the internet, they should remember that she's a human being who is not perfect like everyone else, and she has her good side too like the children she's raising and philanthropy. Click here to read more about that.
